Burano Island
Burano, a small island of fishermen and farmers, is famous for its beautiful laces. The women of Burano create lace masterpieces following an ancient technique using the ‘tombolo’.
This art appeared in Venice for the first time at the beginning of the 16th century, as a direct development of white embroidery on white fabrics and it soon spread all over Europe.
The evolution of this lace technique was the “punto in aria” (air stitch), whereby the lace is created with very thin needles and threads without using any fabric whatsoever.
Famous musician Baldassare Galuppi (1703-85) was born in Burano and is the pride of the island.

In the central Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, a noted musican of Burano, the Museum covers three centuries of creations belonging to public or private collections. The school was created to to promote quality products of the famous Burano lace.
